Project
Problem
Despite having a strong brand in “Charming Palembang” and a wealth of urban tourism assets, the city needed a centralized, highly engaging digital platform to represent its modern tourism vision. The challenge was to create an interactive website that not only listed destinations but actively immersed potential visitors in the city’s atmosphere, making it easier for them to plan their trips, explore local culinary spots, and experience the city virtually before arriving.
Goals
To design and develop the official “Charming Palembang” tourism website as a one-stop digital ecosystem. The main objective was to seamlessly blend informative content with cutting-edge interactive features specifically the “Palembang 360” virtual tour to increase digital engagement, promote local culture and culinary tourism, and elevate the city’s overall brand presence on the internet.
User & Audience Target
Domestic holidaymakers, international travelers, food enthusiasts exploring local culinary heritage, culture and history buffs, and event-goers.
Research & Discovery
Leveraging my background in Information Systems, I structured the data architecture to handle diverse content types ranging from historical articles to high-resolution multimedia. My research focused on urban tourism trends and how interactive media influences travel decisions. WordPress was chosen as the core CMS for its scalability and ease of content management for the client’s internal team. The strategy heavily emphasized integrating a seamless VR experience (“Palembang 360”) directly into the browser without compromising website loading speed, ensuring a captivating and highly optimized user journey across all devices.
Project Scope
End-to-end development of the Charming Palembang promotional website. This included creating a custom user interface, implementing the “Palembang 360” interactive virtual tour, structuring a comprehensive directory for destinations and culinary spots, and optimizing the site for mobile responsiveness and SEO.
Core Solution / App
I engineered the Charming Palembang Website, a highly dynamic, visually appealing web application built on the WordPress CMS. The platform is enriched with custom HTML, CSS, and JavaScript to support specialized functionalities, serving as the ultimate digital guide and promotional tool for Palembang City.
Key Features
Role & Contributions
As the Lead Software Engineer for this project, I handled the full-stack implementation and system integration. My contributions included architecting the WordPress back-end for optimal data flow, customizing the theme for a unique brand identity, and specifically developing and embedding the “Palembang 360” virtual tour using advanced front-end technologies (HTML, CSS, JS). I also conducted rigorous performance tuning to ensure the heavy multimedia assets loaded efficiently, alongside implementing SEO best practices to increase the site’s organic visibility.
Results / Outcomes
The Charming Palembang website successfully modernized the city’s digital tourism infrastructure. The “Palembang 360” feature has become a major engagement driver, significantly increasing average session duration on the site. By providing a centralized, visually stunning, and highly informative platform, the project has successfully amplified the “Charming Palembang” brand, making the city’s rich heritage and culinary scene highly accessible to a global audience, thereby supporting the local government’s mission to boost tourism revenue.
Learnings & Future Steps
This project reinforced the power of combining standard CMS capabilities with custom interactive modules (like VR/360 tours) to create standout web experiences. It also honed my skills in optimizing heavy media assets for web performance. Moving forward, potential enhancements could include expanding the 360 tour to cover more localized MSME (UMKM) culinary spots, integrating an AI-driven itinerary planner for tourists, or adding multi-language support to further capture the international market.
